In 1918 the Queensland Government transferred most of the urban area of Thuringowa to Townsville. The foreshore north as far as Cape Pallarenda and all the land north of the Ross River as far west as what is now Bamford Lane were lost.
Townsville is an important city with a uniquely Australian tropical character. The Townsville City Council, through the Heritage and Urban Design Unit, recognises the city’s character, identity and image is critically linked to its older buildings and seeks to encourage and assist owners of such buildings in restoring and sympathetically altering these historic buildings.
